This project focused on updating a spotted gum timber floor that originally had deep red and orange hues. The client wanted a more modern look with neutral brown and oak tones, removing the overly warm undertones that made the space feel dated. To achieve this transformation, we implemented a thorough process of bleaching, lime washing, and sealing with a water-based finish for a contemporary and long-lasting result.
Original Condition of the Timber
Spotted gum is known for its strong grain and warm undertones, often featuring a mix of deep red and orange shades. While this natural richness is desirable in some settings, the client sought a more muted, modern look that aligned with the rest of their interior.
Challenges included:

Bleaching Spotted Gum for a Neutral Base
The first step was applying a controlled bleaching process to remove the dominant red and orange pigments. Bleaching spotted gum is a delicate task, as the natural tannins in the wood can react differently across boards. To achieve an even, neutral base, we:
Applied a carefully measured bleaching agent to strip unwanted warm tones.
Repeated the bleaching process in targeted areas to balance out variations in the timber.
Neutralized the timber after bleaching to prevent unwanted discoloration when applying subsequent treatments.
The Final Look
The final result was a striking transformation from warm, traditional spotted gum to a sleek, modern oak aesthetic. The combination of bleaching and lime washing successfully neutralized the red and orange tones, replacing them with a subtle brown that perfectly complemented the client’s vision. The clear water-based finish sealed the floor beautifully, providing both aesthetic appeal and practical durability.
