Recommended Timber Finishes 

Oil-based polyurethane is a popular choice for finishing hardwood flooring, furniture, and cabinetry. It is known for its durability and resistance to scratches, stains, and moisture. The finish provides a warm and rich look that highlights the natural grain of the wood.

However, oil-based polyurethane has some drawbacks. It has a strong odor during the application process and takes a long time to dry. It also tends to yellow over time and can be difficult to touch up if damaged.

Water-based polyurethane is a more environmentally friendly alternative to oil-based polyurethane. It dries quickly, has low odor, and is easy to clean up with soap and water. The finish provides a clear, smooth, and durable protective layer that does not yellow over time.

However, water-based polyurethane does not provide the same depth and richness as oil-based polyurethane and can sometimes look plastic-like. It also tends to scratch more easily and may require more coats for maximum protection.

Penetrating oil is a natural finish that soaks into the wood and enhances its natural grain and color. It is easy to apply and dries quickly, providing a warm and natural look that highlights the natural beauty of the wood.

However, penetrating oil does not provide the same level of protection as polyurethane finishes and may need to be reapplied more frequently to maintain its appearance. It also tends to be more susceptible to scratches and stains.

Wax is a traditional finish for wood surfaces and is known for its natural look and feel. It is easy to apply and can be reapplied as needed to refresh the finish.

 

Wax provides a soft and protective barrier that nourishes the wood and enhances its natural beauty.

However, wax can be prone to scratches and stains and is not as durable as polyurethane finishes. It also requires regular maintenance and reapplication to maintain its appearance.

Solvent-based polyurethane uses a solvent as its base instead of water. 

The advantages of solvent-based polyurethane is that it provides a hard, durable finish that is resistant to abrasion and impact. 

However, solvent-based polyurethane has some disadvantages. It has a strong odour during the application process and is flammable, which requires proper ventilation and safety precautions. It also has a high VOC (volatile organic compound) content, which can have negative environmental impacts and is not always suitable for use in indoor spaces.
