 Stain the timber

Myflooring's direct-dye staining is the premium method to change or strengthen the colour of your timber floor. As well as colouring the timber, staining enhances the grain, giving even the more common timbers a distinctive appearance.

A dark stained floor is a sophisticated and contemporary look for your home or business.

Our high quality stains come in a variety of shades and patinas. They penetrate and seal the wood, while adding luxurious colour.

To ensure the best possible results, Myflooring applies stain directly to the unsealed timber. We never mix stain with varnish or apply stain over the top of varnished timber.

There are two quite different types of wood stains - pigment stain (turpentine base) and fade-resistant stain (spirit base). We consult with you to select the most appropriate stain and staining method to suit your needs.

When thinking about changing the colour of your timber, consider these issues:

Timber should never be coloured to be lighter than the original timber. If you want a lighter appearance, refer to information about Liming.

Many people consider staining to cover inconsistencies in floor timbers, such as floors made from different timbers, or timbers of different ages or levels of wear:

  • If your floor is patched from different species of timber (such as a mix of pine and hardwood timbers), staining will not make the varying timbers match exactly
  • Older timber will result in a darker stain relative to new timber
  • The stained colours will not hide variation in the underlying timbers unless Myflooring uses a dark coloured stain
  • The more porous the timber, the darker the stained colour
  • The colour of stained timber is richer when applied with clear varnish on top.

Direct staining vs. tinting

Tinting is a cheap, easy and ineffective method for colouring timber. Tinting involves mixing stain into the floor vanish and applying it by roller, like applying a coating. The tint remains within the finish of the floor, instead of soaking into the timber, and when the floor finish peels or scratches, so does the tint. Myflooring will never use this method on your floors - we value your business and your floors too much.

Direct staining is the most effective way to stain a floor. It actually stains the timber, not just the finish on top. We sand the timber with fine finishing grit and stain the timber directly with your chosen colour. When the stain has dried we apply a clear finish over the stained timber. The staining materials are carefully chosen to not impact the adhesive strength of the top coat. So even if you scratch the top finish of your floor, the timber underneath still has the stained colour.

Direct staining is not easy. It needs a high level of technique and experience which Myflooring can bring to your floors.

 Lime the timber

Liming your floors is a stunning alternative to traditional staining and finishing.

A paler floor is a striking and modern look. It makes your whole property look light and bright. You can choose the look you want. To achieve a whiter look we apply extra coats of lime. Less coats of lime give a light white tone to your floor.

Liming is like a white wash - your timber with all its character, knots and appearance will always be apparent. You can still see the beautiful characteristics of your timber floor through the lime wash. Liming does not give a continuous colour tone, as generally timber is not just one tone.

In the picture (above) you can see a single coat of waterbased liming on an old Baltic pine floor.

We are using only premium quality lime wash from porter's.
